It must be exciting to see the mortgage number so low! If you don't mind me asking, where did it start (i.e., how much did you pay off?) Given the low balance, maybe you could set up some sort of visual goal tracker for your two areas of pay down.
HP - I could do one for the mortgage. For the college LOC it fluctuates a couple times a year so the overall number keeps changing.
Our wee little 850ish square foot 2 bed (plus one in basement) house is in very small town middle SK and purchased in January 96. It was $60 G. The more reasonable, newer 1100 sf house we really wanted was $85G and far beyond what we could afford. I still didn't have a teaching job and DS's paid a heartbeat above minimum wage.
Now our house is worth about $169 and that 3 bedroom bungalow we wanted sold again not too long ago for $250. The newer 3 bedroom, open concept that have gone up in the past couple years are on the market from 4 to 599. It's crazy for where we are. Not California crazy, but still :-)
I still couldn't afford to buy a decent sized house.
Debt is going down down down and your savings are going up up up! DO NOT REVERSE!! :)
Wow, you are getting very close to being debt free now, life is so much easier without a mortgage, we have enjoyed not having one for several years. So much more freedom. You still have to save for this and that but now that we have paid it off it is such a relief!
