September Change

I  knew it was the end of September, but I almost forgot it was the end of September.

I took a moment today to hack into the coin jar and piggy to see what came out this month. I didn't really pay much attention to things so I had no clue what would be inside.

I found, ready to wrap, $10 in quarters and $50 in toonies.

$60, just like that. Was nice to see a bit of positive 'change' in my world :P

Survived September - sorta

Well end of September swoops in tomorrow and then I officially can say I made it through the first month of work.

'Made it' is very very loosely used.

By the skin of  my teeth, is more fitting.

The primary symptoms of colitis are still at bay, so still remission, for now. That is very good news. A secondary symptom of colitis is fatigue. It is alive and well in my word right now. My day consists of rolling out of bed, subconsciously counting the hours til I am done work and can sleep again. I give everything I have at work - have to this year, or I'd be eaten alive with this group.  then I come home to crash on the couch, totally energy depleted. I nap then scramble for supper, then nap again til bedtime.

It goes without saying that I will not be able to keep this up without hacking into additional energy.

How does it affect my world?

I am hard pressed to just get dishes done and a load or two of laundry. There is no meal planning. There is no budget consciousness. There is no blogging. I mean, I got paid on Tuesday and I didn't even take my jar money out yet, but I did charge on my CC for groceries. There is money for that, but it will eat at the accelerated LOC payments.

My school children get all I have. My own children get dregs of leftovers. Not that they are round a lot. DS1's hockey schedule is crazy busy. It is considered a full time job in the Junior A league. He is taking only  a half load at school. Thank goodness he has pretty much all he needs to graduate and a few college entry level courses. DS2 is busy too. He took over DS1's dishwashing job. We have to decide if DS2 can handle it or not. It does eat into his time 3 nights a week and sometimes a fourth or fifth night.

To make it interesting I decided to pick up a great head and chest cold last Saturday. I should buy stock in Kleenex and Nyquil.

I am hoping for some rest this weekend and some time to create a plan to get my world back on track before I start to accumulate debt.

It's been a beautiful September, with lovely weather. That part adds a great bright spot to my spirit.  Happy Saturday!!

What I got for free (almost)

On my weekend to do  list I made sure to include a run to Shoppers Drug Mart as it was their 50th Anniversary Point redemption weekend. I redeemed 50 000 points and received $110 worth of free product. (free meaning I just had tax to pay)

So everything in the picture below I paid approximately $11 for.

I have:
  • tostitos
  • nesquick
  • fibre 1
  • pringles
  • doritos
  • tampons
  • shower puff
  • cat food
  • mousse
  • gel
  • tylenol
  • yogurt
  • foundation
  • lipstick
  • carmex ip medication
  • Cold tablets
  • coke Zero
Conclusion: Inflation Made Me Stronger or Boy costs sure add up fast.

Thank you summer money!

So as much as I hate to admit it, summer is over. The air has changed just as quickly as the leaves.

September has always been my "holy crap winter's almost here...get outside and savour every single moment of fresh air and sunshine before  you get frostbite" month.  My last chance month.

I was going through my summer spending money to see how I spent my $1000 I had saved up for summer spending.  I would have to say I did very much.

The money is designed to give me the financial flexibility to go on short jaunts or provide opportunities for fun for the boys. A boost, if you will.

I spent it in a variety of ways. I used a bit for my And I ran, ran so far away, two day jaunt.  I used some of it to send my boys golfing a few times with their friends and cousins. $70 went for a season pass to get into SK provincial parks. I used it a couple times but DS1 used it far more when he went out to visit his cousin and my oldest sister.  I used a wee bit towards the containers for the cabinets I bought for downstairs. Some went to DS1 for gas when he went camping with some of my family. The bulk of it went for our August long weekend camping trip. Gas for the boys get to get up to our camping. Groceries for our portion of the meals. Snacks and drinks for the weekend. $ to contribute towards gas for the boats (my two brother in laws) .

It was all money well spent and I am so glad I had it saved up.  The best part of all was that I only used $800 of it!! Yes, that's right, I still had $200 of it left.  The memories the money helped create were wonderful. So was the money leftover :-)

That money is heading towards Mr Line of Credit to whack him down at the knees and gives some momentum towards changing my LOC numbers for Oct 5 'where the money stands'.

On Beyond Zebra

"So, on beyond Z!
It's high time you were shown
That you really don't know
All there is to be known."

For those of you who don't know, On Beyond Zebra is a fantastic book by Dr. Suess. I love it because it reminds me that there is always more to something, than a person realizes. I work hard at trying to teach students that we must really look at things and think about things in a variety of ways to truly understand.

There is a LOT to back to school, beyond, sit down and let's open our books :-)

Take, for example, a tire that needs changing. It isn't just a matter of waving your magic tire iron and POOF, it's all fixed.  You need a jack and a tire iron. You need a level surface to jack your vehicle up. You need to know WHERE to put the jack so you don't put it through your vehicle. Do you have a spare? or a donut? do you know the difference? Can you get the nuts off the tire or did some ninja fasten those babies tighter than you could ever possibly loosen....you get the idea.

sure you could call a tow truck. Hello CAA or AAA. Or your dad. I did that. Once. That was the only time I was allowed to. It was followed by an intense course at home so I would know how to do this in the future. Sure, if I had a card or the money I could call someone to do it, but he wanted me to know how much work there was to it and how important it was to know how.

my but I ramble....where was I?

ah yes, on beyond zebra.

That was our catch phrase at work last week....the infamous first week of school. It stood for things like "on beyond exhausted", or "wow I always forget there are a million things to do". We had two or three new students register, for each classroom we have, that first day at school. We'd just get going in the class and there'd be a knock at the door and a new face, and we'd have to start again so they wouldn't miss out on info. There was a lot of desk pirating from room to room to make sure we found good fits for our kids, who come in all shapes and sizes. The copier when down. The laminator went down. The power went off once ( no clue why). You really have to go with the flow.

I was trying to gauge if my tiredness was the usual 'back to school 'tiredness that all staff get that first week when we are running around putting out fires, or if it was 'back to school' tired + colitis tired. All I know is that I needed a quick nap when I got home from school each day.

While juggling that I was making sure my boys were registered properly for school. That first day it was 'see ya boys. here are your cheques for  fees. Don't forget those novels you didn't return last year that now we're going to be charged caution fees for. How are we getting home. DS1 do you have hockey? DS2 do you have work tonight?" and off we'd run.  DS1 had to learn to be his own voice and negotiate his schedule for his graduation year. They were not wanting to let him change it but he needs an alternate schedule to play on this team. They've done this multiple times in the past so he was not breaking new ground. We had contacted one of the counsellors and he checked out the class and period options and made a schedule for DS to take to the registration table. It even had the counsellor's signature. DS was 3 hours waiting and 'using his voice' to make sure he got the classes he needed  in the periods he had available. It was a very important life lesson for him.

DH's back went out. He was on a week's holidays anyways but he could barely move. He had numerous appointments with the doctor, the chiropractor and the masseuse. I guess we shall see if he is able to work Monday. Kind of a waste of a week's holidays.

Add to that I went to get my meds filled and I discover that my medical coverage had been cancelled??? WTF??? so I was on phone call after phone call trying to figure out what had happened. More on that in a different post.

It was fantastic to go for a drink with some of my colleagues last night and relax and just give ourselves a chance to catch up and find out how each other's week had gone.

Another hockey weekend for us for DS1 as he has evaded cuts and is still on the team. DS2 worked three days last week. He will have to see if he can juggle work and school.

The only time I saw the boys was for a 15 min window around 10 pm each night when they got home and right before I dropped off to sleep. We'd go over the schedule for the next day so I would know what was happening.    Ahh the joys of busyness.

I am off for a wonderful walk in the fresh air after my leisurely coffee and then I am off to school to work for about 4 hours to get ready for the week ahead (or start to get ready)

The older I get, the more I realize how much I don't know about so many things. I bet you each have your own 'on  beyond zebra' for  your work or your daily routine, that other folks never really realize how much there is to what you do.

Where the money stands

as of September 6

Debts
Mortgage -  $30 032.09
LOC - $3350

Total Debt - $33 382.09

Savings/Planned Spending
TFSA/EF - $2000
RESP - $11 100
RRSP - $4200
Christmas 2012 - $600

Off the list is the Back to School money. Having it was very much appreciated and saved me a ton of stress.

On the list came Christmas, which will get filled as of end of September.

It will be fun next month to see my mortgage below $30 000. I know I know, a lot of you  have said you are envious of that amount, but remember it all is relative. We only paid $55 000 for it a kabillion years ago. Small town prairies before the boom hit. If I were to sell it now it would be worth $150 000ish. Of course I wouldn't be able to afford a new place to live at our prices LOL. It is very small. 850 square feet. It was in horrid run down condition. It has taken forEVER to get this down. It has been in the $30 000 - $40 000 range since May of 2009.

Knock on wood but I THINK I am ready to meet my savings goals AND start kicking my LOC in the face. Unless something horrid happens, look for that number to FINALLY go down more than $50 a month, Could I USE any more uppercase? lol

I already started mapping out what kind of money I need to set aside for planned spending in 2013. sad LOL

Signs summer is officially over

(oh boy, a bullet post!)

Sure I can check the calendar to see the date, but really, I don't think I need to. Just by things happening around me, I know that summer is definitely over.

  • I slept with the window closed the other night. It was chilly. Actually I went to sleep with it open but sometime during the night DH closed it because he was cold. I woke up to a stuffy room and opened it again :-)
  • The leaves are changing on our tree in the backyard. It's the only one around here that goes red instead of yellow/orange
  • I watched the labour day classic football game between the Riders and the Blue Bombers. We won!
  • I spent the long weekend at the rink. Hockey season has begun again. DS1 had his camp and did very well. We are hoping to sign papers soon and officially begin his Junior level year. I went in flip flops. Take that, ice cold rink!!! You're not the boss of me. (my feet were so cold when I got home LOL)
  • The boys opened their school supplies and got their binders ready. They won't let me write their names on things anymore. Apparently that isn't cool in Grade 12 and 10.  Killjoys!!!
  • My mom made a batch of beet pickles. Hate the taste of them but love the smell of them in the pickling mix and how pretty they look in the jars. Same with mustard bean pickles
  • The geese are meeting up and discussing their plans.
  • I could have worn a jacket when I went for a walk this morning. I didn't, because I am a rebel, but I could have. Was cool :-)
  • My female maine coone kitty is snuggling up  in bed with us again. She hates to be cold.
  • My back to school savings account is dwindling
  • I am not enjoying a leisurely cup of coffee while writing this for you as I have already left for work after having had my final 'back to school' nightmare.

A relaxing Long weekend Monday? not

A precious Monday off!!

I have visions of relaxing at the lake for that one last inhale of summer and fresh air and sunshine and firepits.

They are fleeting visions. I am here at the school with all of my closest friends: 70% of my teaching staff and a big ass bat, hanging on the library ceiling.  I have been divebombed here before so I did the next best thing: I closed the doors and put signs on them.

Bleck!!!!!

happy Monday all!

Sunday Night Chit Chat

What am I reading?

Well I finished Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari for school. It was not bad at all.

And I also finished The PostMistress, by Sarah Blake. It was different than the books I usually read and not bad. It gave me a different viewpoint of  folks behind the scene during WW2 than I had seen before

What am I watching?

DS1 had an exhibition game tonight with his Junior A team. A bit of a road trip to a rink I haven't been to, so that was fun.

What am I listening to?

The wind has been blowing all day so I have the front door open to the screen so I can hear the wind blowing.

What am I cooking or baking?

well nothing, but......

I  hit the grocery store and Walmart with the money I saved and put aside and spent almost $300 on buying staples for the house for the next few weeks - Toilet paper, kleenex, laundry detergent...those kinds of things. Also on the list was a mess of pantry items - canned goods, boxed pasta, grains. The meat department gave me a few things to freeze up for the busy times ahead and the produce section filled my empty fridge. The money went ridiculously quickly. Sometimes when I do this, I feel as though I am channeling my inner Laura Ingalls Wilder as I stock up for winter.

What am I happy I accomplished this week?

Well I made it through the first week back to work and all those meetings. I bit my tongue on more than one occasion, which is hard for me.  I am happy I got in a few walks as well, to destress and get some fresh air.

What am I looking forward to next week?

Well it's my first week with the students so I am looking forward to seeing them all. I am really anxious about it. They will be a tough group and I am scared the full work load and stress will bring on the colitis flares again.

What am I thankful for today?

Time. The beautiful time of a long weekend. such a gift.

Head over to Carla for more Sunday night chit chat.

August Change

It was a good month for change in August. I went into the piggy with the toonies and loonies and was able to roll one of each.

$50 in toonies and $25 in loonies for a total of $75 to plop down on my target goals.

In my best Mr. Burns......

August Goals Recap

August definitely wasn't as strong a month as July, physically or mentally, so I could see things not working out quite as well as I had hoped. I still loved having that me time though. What a gift.

Lose 8 lbs this month (and keep it off)
I struggled. I didn't follow WW and I gained. Shocking hey? *eye roll*

Bake 4 times (on the cooler/rainier days)
-chocolate chip muffins
- rhubarb crisp
That's it.
Try 2 new recipes

Log 50 hours of quality prep work at school (before Aug 26)
