Ok I do something weird with my phone, cell and satellite bills. I round up when I pay. I have a set budget for them. Nice even round numbers. My phone/internet budget is $85. This covers basic phone with call display and my internet. I leave a little wiggle room on that bill on the off chance I have made a long distance call. That rarely happens. As such, when I pay the $85 each month, the amount owing the next month goes a bit less and a bit less. About twice a year, the difference between my $85 and the actual amount is significant enough I can roll a snowflake out of it.
My end December phone bill showed a $30 difference. I pay $85 and owed $55. It was time to roll a snowflake out of it. This time I paid the $55 and withdrew the balance, from my chequing account and immediately took the snowflaked $30 and put it in my high interest account towards a savings goal.
weird? yes, probably, but a wee thing that amuses me and makes bills a little more psychologically fun. I am close to meeting athe first of many savings (planned spending) goals for the year.
Tuesday, Nice weekend!

I have been reading your blog for sometime now and enjoy it. I am a teacher as well, but in BC. I do the same thing with our utility bills. I try to time it so that our summer bill is "free" - some people think its crazy to pay more than you owe, but we spend the most in the summer when we are off and it's nice to not have the bills to pay.
Well hi there Rose and thank you for visiting my wee lil corner of the blogosphere. I hope you visit and comment again :-)
It does add up. I round up my car payment, and voila!
I do little things like this all the time. I over pay the car payment, not by much but say 5-10 dollars. Then in the summer when money is tight I may owe $40.00 less and I can put that money toward a doctor c0-pay or something else. If I don't ever spend it I have a payment or two less at the end of the contract!
That's smart, I like it. So which savings goal did it go to?
Hmm! This is actually a great idea. I've started paying $90 each month on an equal payment plan for my electricity, which is actually pretty good, but I think I might do this in the summer and put the extra towards my debt or something.
LBC - I put it towards the spending money for DS's trip.
I want to do the same with my health insurance. Usually it is €71,25/month, but if I pay it for a year in advance, it's about €30 less. So I will save the entire €71,25 every month, and will have an extra 'bonus' at the end of the year :)
that is pretty awesome! Good for you! I actually round up in my checkbook & every few months I have like $40 when it says '$0' --- I should roll that into a snowflake once per month! See you are so good ;)
I enjoy playing these little games too Jolie - it does help the budgeting process be more fun! I wait each month to see what interest I get on my savings accounts then round up to the next even number - love seeing those zeroes!
