Seriously!!
My phone charger (aged 6 months) had to be replaced today. The charger usb thingie that goes into the phone was mashed for whatever reason.... $20 got me one for my vehicle. They did not have any house chargers in stock for my phone. It would have been $40.
I took my laptop in as well to see if it was once again the cord. The gentleman, having learned my replacement over the past three years story...said maybe, but the lil metal nodule IN the laptop is loose. It MIGHT be fixable, but it might not. It would cost me $70 plus tax for them to just crack it open to see. If it was fixable, that would be another $100 to $200 depending on this and that. So that is just under $300 for that to be fixed. grrrr
The laptop is 3 years old and already slowing down so I am guessing that it has maybe another year left tops.
I am debating now and think it might just be best to get a new laptop for $900 instead of paying potentially $300 for a fix that will last for X period of time. sighhhhh
I can get the loan through my work so it would mean taking so much off my cheque for the next 10 months (school year) or for the next 20 months (2 years).
Do NOT turn 40 :P

What kind of laptop is it?
If it's an HP (zd7000 did have a recall on those little metal pins) but you can usually purchase an expansion base for them, depending on the make. They are usually between $100 to $200 for the expansion base.
I used to do technical support for HP's laptops. :)
Just stumbled here... Is that your total debt on the sidebar including mortgage? We're currently working on our non-mortgage debt, and we're also having laptop issues. So far I am successfully holding off The Hubs from buying a new one, even though I would be the one to most benefit! Hmm...

Frugal - It was a Toshiba and the new one is too. My desktop is HP though
Jolyn, yes the total debt included my mortgage. We bought almost 15 years ago and prices in our wee lil town were low. They are nearly triple now. I would love a bigger house but honestly can not afford to buy one.
