Hey there bloggy readers....our school is having a 'talk with our kids about money' day coming up soon. Each of our class periods that day need to have a money theme. This is for middle school students.
Are there any things out there that you think should be included on a day like this?

I love this! I would say topics could include different incomes with different professions, like how people with certain skill sets make more money or those that work long hours. Basic budgeting could be included. It's hard for kids when they always see us spending money on gas and groceries why we light not have money for extras. I think investing and the power of compounding could be addressed. Save $100 a month starting at age 18 and retire with how much. Different loans like auto or mortgage could be addressed but that might be a little boring for middle schoolers. Basic taxation is a good topic but could also be boring.
Basic want-need education. Money issues or successes are formed in the early teen years I think. They also can grasp rate of pay and number of hours it takes to earn enough to pay for a want. Suddenly a sleepover with DVD and home popcorn is much better than $10 mivie tickeyd and $15 bucket of popcorn and a favorite shirt is well cared for.
believe it or not - being able ( and making sure you do) count your change from a purchase.
Doing research for purchases- ie where can you find the best price for scooter X ( and be sure to research reviews and what exactly you want from scooter x)
keeping track of your money- If they get allowance- How do they organize it? Do they? How do they decide what to buy? Do they ever run out of money? Do they save? - peer sharing and maybe coming up with a class consensus?
Use this to meet some of the Student outcomes for tech- how to create a spreadsheet that keeps track off how much money you have and what you want to buy.....
Math- What is really cheaper the $4.99 peanut butter for 250g or the $7.99 peanut butter for 500g ?
That's off the top of my head for now :)
I would think that showing the kids the cost of their electronics might be good. How much does it actually cost to run a cell phone, video games and consoles, internet, the cost of electricity to power them, etc... I love the counting change one... So many people have no idea how to do the math in their head to figure out the bill... Oh, and I'd add how to tip... Show them the 10-15% rule ( before taxes)...
Is there any way to ask the kids ahead of time what they might be interested in learning about as well?
thanks everyone. It was a great day, at least from my perspective. Our pod created one lesson each and we rotated around the different groups. One group did comparative shopping. Another did 'can you survive as a 19 year old on minimum wage'. I did a hands on activity that went with our science unit. Will they remember anything? not sure but darn it we tried :-) We also had reps in from bmo (a sponsor) to talk with the kids.
