I had my latest Entyvio infusion in the city today, for my colitis, and my mom tagged along. She seems to enjoy the outing, though today her wait time was most interesting.
My clinic shares space with a doctor's office and his clientele is always interesting. Today was more so. Usually mom waits in the main waiting room until my IV is in, then joins me. There is no separate waiting room for the clinic, and mom hates watching me get IVs because I have stupid twisty rolling veins, and it hurts.
Today the main nurse pops into our little clinic portion and says "I'm just going to bring your mom in here. It's a bit rough out there today" Apparently this doctor is one who takes care of those who are...errr... in need of methadone, and today was a visiting day. Mom got to learn about which jail cells three clients had all shared in common and the brother of one of them who did something to tick someone off in jail as they call him 'Willie one-..' err .well you get the idea.
Anyways, mom either wants to stop at Costco or at Wholesale on the way home. Today was Costco.
I have had a membership there for years, but get there rarely these days.
So in no particular order, here were my thoughts:
10) I know why "I" am not at work. This parking lot is full and it's 1 PM. Doesn't anyone work anymore?? We can't all be on break. I honestly was at the far end of the lot, almost on the highway.
9) Parking lot rage. ok there are already 3 people waiting for this young mom to unload her very full cart into her vehicle, whilst juggling 2 little ones. She's going to be awhile. A fourth vehicle pulls around the corner and also puts his signal light on to 'claim the space'. Like you're really going to get it??? Cmon dude. Be real. Do you see me walking from a 1/2 mile away? Try there.
8) I cook really, really boring meals. Discounting the prepacked stuff, there are so many food choices out there and I cook the same 6 things over and over and over again. I have to get more creative with my meals.
7) Those chilled veggie nooks really come in handy when you are having a hot flash. Off went the coat and in and I went to.....look closely at a bag of sugar snap peas.
6) Avoid the intersections with the free food. People get jammed up in there for ages. Take your sample, and MOVE. you can come back to ask the nice lady some questions if you want, but seriously.....move!
5) If you see something unusual or interesting that you like, get it THAT trip. It will not be there the next time you go, even if it's just a few days later.
4) The way people drive in there is a great justification for why we need rules of the road on the highways. People on the wrong side. People stopping in the middle of a main aisle for no reason. People with their carts on angles blocking traffic both ways.
3) There needs to be a 'meeting spot' when you go shopping with someone who wanders off. I must have waited a good 10 min for my mom, who went looking for cucumbers. I was ready to ditch her and just take another mother home with me.
2) Do the receipt checkers really look at the list? at the items in my cart? I have gone through with my sister a few times and there have been a lot of items on that list. At least 50. The receipt checker lady was almost belligerent in her desire to see the receipt and then spent less than five seconds looking at it and the cart. yeah I counted. I was curious lol
and last but not least
1) I question whether I even need a Costco membership anymore. With just two of us at home, we don't need bulk of many things anymore. TP and laundry pods would be about it. Oh, and Timmy K cups :-)

ha, love it. Costco is our primary grocery store, but agree with all of the stuff about other people, samples, parking, etc. It makes me absolutely manic to go there on a busy weekend.
We buy 90% of our produce there, and the quality is higher (and it's cheaper) than our local produce stand. We buy things that we can't get at Costco at the produce stand. I'm sure we'll hit a phase of life where we can't go through all of the volume of produce. ;-)
Re: number 1, I live in Seattle and we have a service call Instacart. They will go to Costco for me for a fee (I think $5?) and I was able to cancel my membership. Maybe it is available in your area too?
Very funny!😊
And so true.... I'm not working but what about all these people ? Is no one at work???
I love your comment on the food samples. My God, people, it's a taste if sausage!!! Please, keep moving!
I feel the same way about the Costco fee, but also found out a way to beat the fee.
If someone buys you Costco gift card they will give you a day pass to enter the store and use them. Works wonders for us, but I would check with your store on this policy.
I really don't think they can refuse you though.
If I was close to the Costco without having to pay $50.00 plus(Bridge Fair) to leave the Island every time I would probably shop there more often.
Hope this helps and I really do enjoy reading your blog!
Wow! You have completely explained why I don't have a Costco membership any longer!!
I like going to Costco for fun but we don't have a membership. It's fun to browse though!
Love the Costco list! Too funny!
Our Costco staples are toilet paper, coffee, syrup, salt&pepper grinders, dog food, and dishwasher tabs.
I only go once or twice a year with my mom for a few reasons. 1) I lose control and spend too much 2) I buy too and it ends up being wasted and 3) The produce and meat comes from God knows where, so I don't feel right buying it vs supporting local producers.
I have a BJ's membership because Costco in our area is just as crazy. Hope you are doing well, so sorry about your clinic visits. They can't be fun.
We go every couple of weeks but only after 6pm and on Monday-Wednesday. Crazy busy otherwise. And we will fill up with gas too.
The meat is good, I divide into smaller freezer bags at home. Coffee, bread, wraps, fruit, salad fixins, coconut water and my must have Chicago mix popcorn!
I agree about the receipt checker people...all they do is plug up the exit line!
lol Glad I am not the only one who has these feelings.
CS - I definitely spend too much there. Funny how I can go into a dif store with a list and stick to it, but at Costco, not so much.
Sharon - haven't heard of BJs. Maybe a US thing? Have to look that up.
B-Kat - I have never gotten gas at Costco. Line ups are always insane there.
Jessie - Sounds like a fairly practical list. Do you ever buy meat or produce there?
The Witch - having to pay the Bridge Fair definitely would make one rethink going. Kinda like for me...its a tank of gas to get to the city and back.
Jane - one day I will be strong like you.
Christina - I used to feed my kids walking through on sample day.
Lisa - I will have to look that up. I do live about a 100 miles from there, so I suspect they won't deliver for free :-)
HP - I bet you have a lot more produce selection there in California than we do up here. It's mostly staples like carrots and snap peas, some basic fruit, etc
Pear - I always head to the book section first. I rarely buy there, but the books just call to me
