This could be up for debate but I have to say that I think my biggest financial mistake this year was NOT going to the gym, that I pay $48 a month to go to. It's one of those pay a membership fee and then pay per monthy for the year, kinda places. If one quits, then one has to REPAY the horrid membership fee again. I think it's one of those psychological traps that keep ppl paying every month out of fear that if they quit and then change their mind..it will cost them again.
The first year it was open I went 100 times during the year.
This year, I'm pretty embarrased to say I went a whopping 32 times.... 6 of which were this past week since I've been out of school.
So I wasted money. Heaps and oodles of it. I lost opportunity to go and get my VERY out of shape and overweight body into a better place. Crazy. and NO excuse. None. Nada.
At $48 per month that means I spent a total of $576 for the year's membership. Dividing that by the 32 times I went, it means that each and every one of those visits cost me $18 each. That's right. $18!!
Compared to the year before when each of my visits 'cost' me $5.76...it's a sad statement.
In my community there are four gyms/fitness centers. One in my town and three across the river in the neighbouring city. I really like having this one in my town and close to home.
Needless to say..... going to the gym is on my list of things for self improvement for 2010.
So this absolutely has to change for next year.

I've joined gyms and tried to leave gyms before - it's a pain! I'm not going to join another gym in 2010 - but getting my body in shape is defn. going to be a personal goal... just haven't figured out exactly how it's going to happen yet.
Ouch!
Good that you have identified the problem and put numbers to paper. I like working it out per visit and seeing what the actual cost is.
Perhaps there is another fitness solution? My wife does Pilates. People pay for 10 sessions and book them at their leisure...
Happy new year!
It is for me too. We pay $104 a month for the YMCA. We have unlimited access to the gym, pool, classes, etc. Now, swimming lessons for 4 children is worth the money we spend alone, but we could be taking more advantage of it. Amy and I have decided that we're going to start with Aquafit at least once a week, but I am hoping that we can do more. I have to take advantage of the time that I am there with the boys while they're at swimming lessons too.
That is a bummer for sure - You can do it! Maybe each time you go you can put the price on the calendar --- like for the first this year you put the total it will cost you for the year... the next time, divide it by 2 - then the next time divide by 3... and keep going - when you see the price, you just may go more often!
I pay about $28 a month. I think I've gone... 20 times. MAX. I think mine works out to be about $17 per visit. :( I'm in the same boat as you. Weightloss & general health is also one of my 2010 goals. We can do it! p'-'q
