And I bought a book. I am very much quick to choose or discard. I had wandered for about 20 minutes and found this as it caught my eye.
what's even better is, this weekend at dad's I had downtime AND enough brain energy to read it.
It's about Consuelo Vanderbilt Marlborough. I confess to knowing very little about the Vanderbilts beyond 'famous name' and was pleased at how much I enjoyed the book.
The love of reading was very much inspired by my mom and I haven't really read since she got sick. I hope this is a sign of a positive change in my world. It's a book mom would have loved too.
What's more, I went to the library and found another fiction book about this family and started it.
What a joy to be able to read again.

Two years ago, my American friends I was visiting and I went to Newport, RI. There were several mansions called "cottages" of the Guilded Age. I think, we visited three cottages and The Marble House was among them. It belonged to Consuelo Vanderbilt's father. I remember seeing her room all decorated in a Far Eastern style despite the fact that this was not her wish. The narrative we listened to said that, her mother, Alva was an overbearing mother who furnished the room that way and she also later on forced her to marry the Duke. The mansion or rather the cottage was truly amazing. Visitors were not allowed to see the living quarters of the servants. We have been told they were really cramped and very hot in the summer.
That's great! I know how rewarding it can to be a really GOOD book! My mother was a writer and a librarian and as such passed on a lot of "discards" to me over the years. Reading is my favourite thing of all to do! You're so fortunate that your mom instilled a love of reading in you - it can really help you get through the hard times I find. And it's a worthwhile escape!
