We headed into the city yesterday. The primary goal was to get DS1 new equipment for hockey as he's grown immensely since last season ended. We braced ourselves as we knew this was not a low budget trip. It wasn't. Not even a little bit. It's the price we pay for having him in sports, and at the higher level of sports he will be at. He needed new skates (the most costly of all the items), pants, shoulder pads, a new bag as his was pretty much toast after lasting three seasons, and a new stick.
Total cost for the boy's base needs: $1349. Scary hey? And that is only about half the equipment. Fortunately the gloves, shin pads, elbow pads and helmet still fit. I'll still need to put out about another $100 for his mouth guard (note to self: get that done next week).
Money is all about choices and yes this is indeed a costly one. But we don't smoke or drink.... we don't gamble or ski....we don't have expensive summer and winter outside toys. I know far too many folks who spend their cash on those items. Choices.

Wow, it does cost a lot for hockey!! Your DS is lucky to have parents who choose to spend money on him that way...
Soon it'll be hockey time! July's almost gone...
!!!! I had no idea hockey was so expensive! You have to pay to rent the rinks and such, too, right?
That's just insane. Can't you buy this junk used?
CS - yes we have our first camp mid august.
Dog - lol it sure is. This is AA or AAA level so it's a higher level of hockey. Yes there will be the regular association fees plus all the team stuff once it's determined what team he will be on. Used isn't really an option. The skates have to be specially molded to his feet. The other equipment is usually well worn before it hits the 'used market'.
I remember being all idealistic when I was first pregnant thinking, I'm going to have two little girls who curl up and read little house on the prairie books with their mama. NOT lol
wow - that sure is expensive!
Does your hockey player have to chip in at all when it comes to $$ for hockey?
He's only 14, so no. His end of the baragain is to keep clean (no drugs, no smoking, no alcohol), keep active, and keep his grades up to Honour Roll. He pays for half of his cell phone. Next summer he'll be old enough to get a part time job if he can work it around his schedule, and then we shall see about contributing.
